Amid the neverending sound and sight of water, the gray, the nationwide debility that surrounds this fresh morning, I remember it was on this day that we took that nerve-wracking plunge three years ago.

Three years. Then, I was just an antsy bride whose major worries involved reception table numbers and slipping into a dainty, perfectly fitted gown. Now I’m a mother who couldn’t care about my uncombed hair and those stray brows as much as I do for a soiled diaper.

Marriage is no walk in the park. Like everything else in the world, it takes serious work.
Some time down the road, you’re bound to lose the butterflies. Sparks will die down. You get accustomed to beer bellies, farts, belches and what-not. Some time down the road, you’ll be strapped to responsibilities and preoccupations, and forget couple occasions like this one. When everything sinks into the ordinariness of life, what you will be are companions more than lovers.

Somewhere along  the road, Love alone will not suffice. It must be soldered by commitment and will. Because in marriage, Love transcends consuming chemistries and inconvenient, crazed urges. Feelings fleet. Commitment is eternal.

Happy Anniversary, mister. May we always find the commitment to be good to each other, be better parents to our child and be the best of friends when all that’s left of us are loose, lifeless skin and empty arms.
