For him who has been bitten by the travel bug, the inspiration to go out and explore territories can spring from the most mundane: an old picture, a conversation , a song (Iceland became a bucketlist item foremostly because of Sigur Ros).
For me, the relentless passion for travel began as a kid, something that was passed on by my stepdad, who loved waking us up for unplanned pack-in-an-instant 3 am trips to various places in Luzon.
When I was in third grade, my parents asked me to list a specific reward I wanted for each medal I’d get after the school year. I remember giddily scouring PLDT’s fat Yellow Pages Directory for beach resorts and listing down Eagle Point in Anilao if I got first honor, Caylabne Bay Resort for second, and Island Cove for third.
Unfortunately, I never got a medal that year – that would follow three years after. But that habit stuck with me, and my travel bucket has grown tremendously since. For nearly a decade now, I’ve been keeping a scrapbook brimming with old travel articles and postcards of places I’d like to venture out to in the Philippines and in Asia. Such photographs and tales of other travelers inspire me to sojourn away from home, one baby step at a time.
Now, I want to share that inspiration with you.
I am giving away one of Nigel Hicks’s colored paperback travel guides/ photo books, The Magic of the Philippines, to a fellow travel enthusiast.
