It’s Women’s Day, and I am watching The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez on Netflix next to my sleeping daughter. It’s a hard watch. A kid constantly abused by his own mother and her lover. Months of beating and torture that led to death. He was eight.
Not all parents are good for their kids. And not all mothers are naturally built to be doting and altruistic.
This Women’s Day, I salute the women who choose to do what’s right not based on biology, but because of humanity.
The women who do not want to have kids or even like kids to begin with, but choose to be just and good to them because they are human beings. The exhausted mothers who are at wit’s end, but at the end of the day, choose to continue loving their children and start afresh the next day, no matter how patience-draining and stubborn their kids are; how demanding and energy-consuming motherhood can get. The women who choose to fight for everyone and do what is right, regardless of age, sex, or stature. Because it’s human to do so. Because it’s the right thing to do.
You are all mighty heroines in your own right – with child or without.
Happy Women’s Day, ladies. Keep fighting the good fight.
