I am simply smitten with Juliana Hatfield. I just love her. Since I first listened to her ’round year 2000, I’ve been hooked not only to her music, but also her personality. She shines even with age. I think that more than Britney or any other banal girl pop sensation, she most deserves a spot amongst the music industry’s most credible icons (but then, she already has a cult following in the indie world, who respects her alongside the gods).
Her music has that light -almost fluffy, giddy-, melodious, easy listening character (yes, even if it’s rock) that’s nice to listen to while you’re driving. Her songs emit that positive energy even when it’s about anger or frustration. Her voice is incredibly soft, kind of child-like at times. I like it too that there’s this distinct style she has when it comes to songwriting; She doesn’t make it bleed with too much seriousness or gravity. She just tells it as it is, no excessive melodrama and all.

Too, I found Juliana Hatfield’s blog today at her new website and I cream it! There’s none of those life-of-a-superstar entries going in like the ones you’ll read in other famous artists’ sites. In fact, it seems just like the blog of a girl, like you and me,who reads the paper and is affected by it, who likes to share films she’s watched, who has her own thoughts and take on reality TV, who hates the new kingsized Snickers bar. I find it personal and well, normal, than laced with marketing.
Out of all her entries, I liked her Huffington post piece – which talks about the burgeoning problem of stray dogs in Puerto Rico – the most. It’s nice to read about an artist who feels strongly about issues like this and who also cares about searching for solutions to real-life problems, not just her record sales.
