Free WiFi. Two words that has become synonymous with overpriced coffee and hotels. In our town though, overpriced coffee is typically unheard of as much as free WiFi is. Nope, no Starbucks, Figaro, Seattle’s Best or similar joints ’round here.

So when we passed by Brewlacan, a newly-built Free WiFi coffee shop along the Sta. Clara Highway (right across the street from Waltermart) a few months ago, we were pleasantly surprised.  Bold entrepreneurs, I thought.

For one, folks over here are not known to be coffee enthusiasts. It’s a progressive municipality, alright, but people here know better than showing off in cafes with a latte grande and a netbook.  Adults are to be found in wet markets selling meat from their own poultry and pig farms. On Sundays they go to Church or stay in their homes with the kids. The teens do the same.

Ze curious bee in me was interested to try it out, so when the husband got a haircut from the adjacent salon, I had the perfect excuse to do so.

The cafe interiors and well-written copy of the ad signage outside can be intimidating to on-lookers, but this is where judging the book by its cover adage need not apply.

The menu, consisting of various local and foreign frappes and hot drinks, is very reasonably priced – ranging from P60 – P90. All frappes come with generous chocolate toppings, whip cream and a choco stick. Cake desserts are a bit pricier, starting from P75 to P95 per small slice. I’ve yet to try these sweet treats, though. They look pretty yummy.

They have this beautiful pair of easy chairs and a rustic table by the window overlooking the street, which I’ve grown to love.

Cappucino drops
On our first visit, I ordered a glass of Cappucino Drops (P60), which is basically the same as the more expensive Cappucinowey (P90), only it uses locally brewed coffee beans and other ingredients. Was surprised at how filling these sinful tall beverages are.The whipped cream was delish and they did not scrimp on the choco toppings. Not patronizing, but I enjoyed it better than I did Starbucks’ cappucino frappe.

Breakfast Delight II (P150)
We had a mommy-and-Lia-only second visit during the weekend and the cafe seems to be picking up. There’s a dedicated space for an indoor smoking area and five computer units in the future. There was another mom and daughter pair apart from us, and they added a few breakfast sets to the menu.

I picked  Breakfast Delight II, consisiting of one choice of frappe plus two fluffy scrambled eggs, two ham slices and four half slices of toasted bread (P150). Picked Java Grande to see if the expensive frappe really does fare better than the local cheaper version, but ended up a bit disappointed. The cocoa tasted stale and overall, the drink was too sweet. The breakfast was okay. Eggs had too much pepper – and the pepper was still raw – and the ham was a bit alty. I’m guessing CDO.

‘Twas nonetheless very filling and still reasonable for the price. I love the relaxed ambiance and friendly staff. Would love to come back to try the other menu offerings.

  1. Oo sulit talaga, kasi the frappe itself pa lang is P90 na. Sana lang medyo bawasan ang alat, baka pagtagal magkasakit ang customer sa bato. Haha.

Yes, super enticing nga ang coffee 🙂

  2. Wow naman, sarap naman kumain dyan… their generous nga with their toppings…And ganda rin ng presentation ng foods nila. Hope mag click ang kanilang business =) Kung medyo malapit lang yan dito, pupuntahan ko na yan… LOL

  3. hi, my first visit here and definitely not the last. I love cozy and quaint coffee shops, the more famous ones are kinda noisy and crowded 🙂

  4. That's what I hope too. Sana magclick para magtagal kas wala talagang coffee shop dito – at mura pa.
