Few months back, I spotted a CashCashPinoy deal for Cello’s Doughnuts & Dips during a late night breastfeeding marathon with Lia. Curious and famished, I immediately placed one voucher on my e-shopping cart (And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why you must avoid group buying sites and grocery stores when hungry).

Box of 15 (Assorted). P180.

For years, I’ve been curious about this local pastry shop’s offerings with the plentiful reviews on how wonderful their doughnuts are – not to mention the melted chocolate dips! – and last weekend, I was finally able to take a sampler. Took home a box of the assorted ones plus one bag of C’s with dip and a piece of the stuffed doughnut with cheese.

Cello’s at the SM North Sky Garden. Relaxed, hip vibe.
Cheese- stuffed doughnut. P35.

One word: WOW.

The doughnuts, whether fresh or reheated (Microwave for eight seconds. Maybe 12 if you want it hot), are exquisite and soft as moist cake. If you are watching your figure, the box of minis would do you well. Just about a third of the regular-sized ones but with the same wonderful quality – something you don’t usually find in other stores (GoNuts, Mister Donut and Dunkin Donuts all seemed to have deteriorated in taste when they started offering the 10-peso donuts).

Flavors in the box of 15: Oreo (probably the only so-so for me), peanut butter, cinnamon.

Picking a favorite out of the bunch was a feat for they were all so devilish, but the cheese, chocolate, strawberry, and sugar-glazed flavors top the list.

Queso!
I love, love, love the chocolate frosting. Delicate but rather heavenly.

Opening that carton swarmed my heart with much glee every time. Trying out a variety of tiny sweet goodies in one sitting makes for a fun pseudo-food connoisseur experience.

Strawberry. Now this one was most surprising.
Surely didn’t expect that thin layer of sugary strawberry
coating to be bursting with so much fresh strawberry-ness.

The C’s with Toblerone dip were also a hit even for the husband, who isn’t the least bit interested in sweets and dessert. I’d suggest you still take the dip even if you aren’t into sweets, because the C doughnuts are much subtler than you think, and your palate’s better off with a little saccharine flirting with it. You’d be surprised how light the dip is. It’s chocolatey, yes, but does taste exactly like Toblerone, albeit more delicate.

Bag of C’s.  P100 for 3 C’s with one choice of dip.
And this is the best part!

That’s probably the best thing about Cello’s (Well, aside from the fact that each piece comes freshly baked everyday): It doesn’t overload you with too much sugar. The sweetness in each piece is wonderfully balanced, just enough to perk you up, but not too much it makes your tooth ache.  Pairs well with any beverage, too.

Sugar glazed doughnut. Sarap!

Here’s to group buying, newfound discoveries and new favorites!

  1. I think Filipinos are doughnut obsessed! And if you want a favour, doughnuts are a great way to bribe a Filipino! 🙂
