I’ve always wanted to do this. Somehow, I couldn’t bring myself to do so, probably for reasons of vanity.
When I revisited the blog after a 12-day busy-mommy/sis-in-law/worker hiatus, I was saddened to see that its Top Blog status slipped down from #436 to #730 – which is not far from where I used to be when I launched the blog more than a year ago.
Then I stopped to think. Why the hell am I being so consumed by numbers anyway? I have become a slave to how many visitors I’ve had in the past hour, the number of daily unique visitors in sitemeter, how far along I am from being in the top 100 in Top Blog, how fast the flag counter rounds up. Truth is, I spend more time scrolling down to those buttons than I do creating a new post.
This is not why I set up a blog in the first place. It was born out of passion to write and share. I am not here to compete or gain recognition. I have never fancied cutthroat competitions in any era of my life. It’s useless to start now. That’s just not me.
So I changed the sitemeter button to show no numerical figures, and deleted the flag counter and Top Blog widgets. And I’ve never felt more free. No more distractions, no addiction.
Now I can go back to doing what I love best. Isn’t that the whole point, really?
You know, I've got that topblogs widget on my homepage as well. I see my number fluctuating from 500 to 800. I really don't care about it. Just like you said why bother! 🙂
Nice blog by the way.
I know! Happens to me, too. Plus the counter usually is a day lag than the real count.
Thanks for the kind words and for visiting 🙂
